The new two-platform stop at Green Park Business Park was approved by Reading Borough Council’s planning applications committee last Wednesday and is set to be open by 2017.

After the original permission for the station which was awarded in December 2007 expired, developers had to re-apply to both the local authorities it will lie in.

The new hub – which sits on the western border of Reading borough – was earlier approved by West Berkshire Council on February 27.

As well as the station itself the plans include a 242 space car park and roads linking the development to the rest of Green Park.

Councillor Tony Page welcomed the decision and pointed out that following the electrification of the line, trains will be able to accelerate fast enough to take in the new stop without adding to journey times.

He said: “The difference between now and then is we are in a position to deliver it with funding from Green Park. We also have additional funding through the local transport board and the welcome electrification of the line which will enable the additional stop at Green Park to be accommodated within the existing timetable.”

Cllr Marian Livingston said: “I welcome another avenue of access for Royals fans to the Madejski Stadium which will help with the traffic flow on match days.”
