Failure to leave space for a planned transport route linking the railway station to Thames Valley Park and a lack of affordable housing were cited as reasons the 352-home development would never get off the ground.

The planning committee agenda contained further objections based on height, use of the space and its position in the town’s skyline.

It read: “This development is inappropriate in that it would cause significant harm to short-range views and the related public realm by overbearing and dominating the surrounding streets and buildings.”

Concerns over a lack of “mixed housing” were also raised in fears the development would fail to “contribute towards mixed and balanced communities.”

Reading Borough Council’s planning committee members will take the officers’ comments on board before making their verdict next Wednesday.
