The Red Cow had been run for decades by a local couple until a changing market and ill health forced then to close up shop for good last week.

But Heath Thomas and the team who helped bring The Lyndhurst in Queen’s Road back to life are about to sign on the dotted line to ensure the Southampton Road boozer remains a part of the community.

Mr Thomas, 45, said: “It’s good news and it’s also very tragic news. The couple who used to own it had been there for decades and they were not young when they bought it.

“The lady was in bad health and I was sadly told she has since passed away.”

In an effort to keep the venue in use, Mr Thomas has plans to give the building the basic repairs it needs before reopening in time to make the most of the summer weather.

He said: “I’ve got some really good ideas – I am looking at craft ales and beers, very simple food, and I want to make use of the outdoor space and the rooms upstairs.”

Without wishing to detract from the work of his predecessors, the soon-to-be new landlord plans to strip away the carpet and redecorate the 19th Century pub into a “shabby chic” retreat for a younger, more vibrant, crowd.

He added: “It can be a very simple trade. All you have to do is keep everything spotless and let people enjoy what is on offer.

“The rest of it is just about putting a bit of your personality into the place.”

Using his trusted team, Mr Thomas plans to use his 30 years of experience working in bars and pubs to bring the pumps back to life before the end of the summer.
