The Texaco petrol station had its efforts thwarted 17 months ago by community pressure when it failed to gain approval to sell booze at all hours in September 2013.

But on February 9, Reading Borough Council received another application from Krisco Services Ltd, who run the garage at 150 Oxford Road, to allow alcohol to be sold 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Currently the licence at the 24 hour petrol station and shop runs from 6am to 3am.

Speaking about the reapplication to vary the premises licence, Battle ward councillor Chris Maskell said that residents were determined to object to the plan once again.

Cllr Maskell said: “Residents in this area already suffer noise nuisance and antisocial behaviour at all hours of the day and night. Twenty-four hour opening will unnecessarily draw people from a wider area at unsociable hours.

“Texaco are applying to fill the gap between 3am and 6am when they are not permitted to sell alcohol. Closing the gap may appear insignificant, but three extra hours will provide a further window of opportunity for those in need of alcohol.

“Once alcohol has left the premises of Texaco their responsibility ends.”

To object to a licensing application, members of the public are only permitted to comment on four grounds; crime and disorder, public nuisance, public safety, and the protection of children.

The application states that CCTV, training every six months for staff, and signage encouraging customers to leave the premises in an orderly manner would ensure that extended hours did not lead to unwanted behaviour.

The closing date for comments on the application is March 9. The matter will then go to be considered by the council’s Licensing Applications Committee.
