Caversham is set to be closed to traffic for two days for emergency water pipe repairs.

Leaking pipes under the road's surface are set to be repaired by Thames Water.

One lane of traffic in Church Street will be inaccessible to traffic coming from the north.

Traffic coming from the south over Caversham Bridge will still able to drive through Church Street and along Prospect Street.

The traffic will be affected on Tuesday and again Wednesday.

The excavation will concentrate on the road outside Ashley Blooms flower shop and Waitrose.

Motorists from the north will be asked to follow diversions over Reading Bridge during the work. The work is due to finish on Wednesday 14 January.

Justin Coffey, spokesman for Thames Water, said: “We’re sorry for the disruption our work will cause.

“The pipes need to be repaired before they burst as that could lead to problems on a much larger scale including flooding and interruptions to customers’ water supply.

“By fixing the leaks as a piece of planned work it means we’ve had time to notify drivers and property owners of our plans. We’ll be working as hard as we can to get the road reopened quickly.”
