THE number of unemployed people signing on in Reading has dropped for the seventh consecutive month.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today show the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance fell by 72 from 1,859 to 1,787 between August and September which is 1.6 per cent of the working-age population.

The number of people signing on in Wokingham dropped from 626 to 610 giving the borough the lowest percentage of JSA claimants at 0.6 per cent, whilst despite a drop of 0.1 per cent Slough has the highest percentage of working age population in Berkshire claiming benefit at 1.9 per cent, down from 1,884 to 1,820.

In West Berkshire figures were down 68 to 695 (0.7%), while unemployment was down in South Oxfordshire from 532 to 474 (0.6%).

Across the South East, there were 70,929 claimants (1.3%) down 2,635. Nationally, the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance last month fell by 37,909 to 923,240.
