NEIGHBOURS in Reading are some of the most likely to donate to charity in the UK.

The town has come third in a table of the nation’s most generous towns which shows that 36 per cent of Reading’s 155,698 people donate to charity.

Topping the table, compiled by the charity website JustGiving, was Bedford (50 per cent) followed by Cambridge at 38 per cent.

Andrew Middleton, CEO of Berkshire Community Foundation, hailed the news as proof that people in Reading, and across the county, are still generous to good causes.

He said: “The residents of Reading, and in fact all of Berkshire, are very generous.

“For many charities, these are very difficult times, with other funding streams reducing. It’s vital that local charities have the support of local people, and we hope that the people of Reading will continue to generously support them.”

The tables were compiled using donations made between June 1 last year and May 31 this year.

and looked not only at the proportion of givers but the total given.

Kent town Sevenoaks topped the list of highest givers with each donor giving an average of £42.29.
