THE company behind the Reading Festival is donating £2,500 to the borough mayor’s charity fund.

Reading Borough Councillor Tony Jones is collecting for Help for Heroes, Home-Start Reading and Reading Refugee Support Group this year and is being given a large helping hand by Festival Republic.

The company’s managing director Melvin Benn said: “Reading Festival is a big part of the local culture and continues to be such a success thanks to the town’s support.

“Therefore it is a pleasure to donate to Cllr Jones’ charity fund and support some of the brilliant charities in the area.”

Cllr Jones raised £55,000 for charitable causes during his first stint as mayor between 2001 and 2002.

He said: “Reading Festival has a strong international reputation and helps put our town on the world map.

“I am grateful to Mr Benn and Festival Republic for this generous donation to the Mayor’s Charities Fund and look forward to welcoming the many thousands of festival-goers to Reading for a safe and successful weekend.”

The festival takes place this weekend, from Friday to Sunday, at Little John’s Farm.

Headliners include the Arctic Monkeys and Blink 182.
