FALLEN heroes were remembered when nearly 100 people took a trip down memory lane to commemorate the First World War.

More than 70 members of the Berkshire Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds attended Abbey Baptist Church in Reading on Monday to mark the centenary, dressing in outfits from the era and tucking into authentic food.

While some opted for traditional clothes, others dressed as nurses for the event, where war poetry was read out and songs were sung.

Guests then enjoyed a meal of jacket potatoes with cheese and apple pie and custard.

Mary Absolom, chairwoman of the Tilehurst Heights Townswomen’s Guild, said: “It went really well. We had a lovely day for it and everyone seemed to really enjoy it.

“We hold events regularly and we wanted to do something different, and we thought tying a celebration in with the centenary fitted really nicely.”
