Land of nod: Haji Banaras falls asleep as his leader's back is turned

Fast asleep: Battle councillor Gul Khan, left, is wide awake but council hopeful Haji catches forty winks

Wide awake: Haji, far right, roused himself just in time for the candidates' photocall with Mr Miliband

FOR a politician to get caught napping is one thing - but nodding off in front of your boss takes it to a whole new level.

A beady-eyed photographer snapped this picture of Labour's Tilehurst candidate Haji Banaras grabbing some shut eye while his leader Ed Miliband attempted to boost the party's campaign in Reading ahead of next week's council election.

Haji must have been campaigning hard over the past few days or just failed to get the memo from Labour HQ about the party's drive to help their leader shake off accusations that he is boring and uninspiring.

The Labour leader was in Reading yesterday for a question and answer session at Reading College when hapless Haji roused himself just in time for the obligatory photocall with his fellow candidates before Mr Miliband hopped on a train back to London.

Only the Tilehurst dreamer will know which of Mr Miliband's carefully devised policy pledges sent him drifting off to the land of nod - but one thing's for certain, it will be a long time before he receives his next invite from head office.
