A MAN had to be rescued by the fire brigade after the kebab shop below his flat caught fire.

Firefighters from Wokingham Road, Caversham Road and Dee Road Fire Stations were called to Kebabish in London Road at Cemetery Junction at 2.30pm today (Saturday).

Firefighter David Grayson, of Wokingham Road, said a man in his 40s who was trapped in his room was rescued by firefighters who put a ladder up to his window. Mr Grayson said: "He was shaken but otherwise okay."

He added: "Everyone was evacuated safely and there were no reports of an injuries."

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the kebab shop to tackle the fire, which had started in the kitchen. The cause is believed to be accidental and possibly started at a grill or the extractor fan.

The fire brigade said the staff from the shop had turned off the gas and electricity as they left, and much of the hot gas escaped up the extractor fan, so the fire did not spread as much as it could have. Mr Grayson said though the kitchen was badly damaged and the rest of the area was smoke damaged. The fire brigade was there two hours.
