£105,000 winter boost for the vulnerable
THE Government has awarded £105,000 to help vulnerable people in Reading struggling to keep warm during the winter.
Health authorities estimate around 80 people in Reading die needlessly each winter as a direct result of cold homes.
These are often vulnerable elderly people whose homes either need minor repairs to protect them against the low temperatures or who struggle to pay heating bills.
The Government's Warm Homes Healthy People handout has been given to Reading Borough Council after it bid for the money late last year. The funds will also be used to support other groups, such as people with disabilities and very young children.
Health leader Cllr Bet Tickner said the council has contacted Age UK for help in encouraging people to seek support, and its housing repair contractor Ridgeway, to see how the money could be used most effectively. She added: "A little help at the right time can make all the difference."
The council is urging vulnerable residents or their neighbours to get in touch through its Winter Watch: Saving Lives BY Working Better With You awareness campaign. The funding could be used to block draughts, pay fuel bills or introduce energy efficiencies in their homes, for example.
