A FAMILY were evacuated from their home last night after a sofa in their front garden was set on fire.
A crew from Dee Road fire station and one from Caversham rushed to Shaftesbury Road, west Reading, at 11.40pm to deal with the blaze and prevent it spreading to neighbouring terraced houses
The sofa had been put in the garden for collection by the council waster service and investigations are under way to establish whether it was set alight deliberately by someone walking past, or even by a cigarette discarded from a passing vehicle.
Watch manager Jock Wenn from Dee Road said the four family members, a couple and two children, were unharmed and there was only heat damage to the front bay window.
Police are investigating the incident.
