CAROLS and candles lit up the evening gloom when hundreds came together to support a homeless and housing charity at the coldest time of year.

The third annual Carols By Candelight event at St Mary's in the Butts, organised by Launchpad, formerly the Reading Single Homeless Project, was expected to raise about £5,000.

A choir from The Abbey School and a recorder ensemble from Englefield Primary School entertained the audience, which also heard readings from BBC TV's Matt Allwright, and Anne Diamond from BBC Radio Berkshire. The charity's patrons, the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, were also at Thursday night's event.

Fundraising officer Colin Wallace said: "It's been a good year for Launchpad. Everybody's been struggling but we've been holding our own and are looking to expand, including going back to our roots with the Winter Watch project of these months.

"It's really tough for the homeless
