Rail electrification to go ahead

UNDER-THREAT funding for electrifying the Great Western mainline has been protected by the Government.
It was thought the project could fall victim to the public spending cuts but transport secretary Philip Hammond said on Thursday: "We cannot afford not to invest in Britain's future."
The £600m project, originally announced by the Labour Government at Reading Station in July last year, means diesel services in the Thames Valley will be replaced by smoother and more eco-friendly electric trains.
It is expected to be completed by 2016
