A YOUNG adventurer is putting his muscles and mind to the test in a bid to join a team rowing to the North Pole.
Sean Meehan, 25, from Cintra Avenue, Reading, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Old Pulteney Pole Position competition and on Saturday will battle it out all day at Dorney Rowing Lake as he tries to join the team.
He will be doing a two-hour endurance rowing session and undergoing mental tests and interviews. Adventurer Jock Wishart will lead the expedition in August next year, setting off from Canada in a 450-mile Arctic crossing in an 'ice boat'.
Judges who put Sean through to the finals praised his "determination, fitness and stamina". If he wins on Saturday he will get personal training ahead of next year's record attempt.
Sean has 15 years of rowing experience and has rowed for England and Wales, narrowly missing out on the Great Britain team.
He said: "It would be great to get on the team, both for the record attempt and to raise awareness of climate change. It's the one month where the ice has melted, before it refreezes. It would be a perfect cap on my rowing career - the cherry on the top!"
The winner will be announced at the London Boat Show in January.
