A BLOCK of flats was evacuated after an unattended chip pan caused a small kitchen fire.

A fire crew from Wokingham Road fire station attended the blaze at a flat in Newcastle Road, Whitley at 1.47pm today (Saturday).

Firefighters were alerted after fire alarms in the block went off and a neighbour spotted smoke pouring from a window.

Crew manager Simon Stephenson said: “Residents should not ever leave chip pans unattended.”

Firefighters were there for about half an hour and had to give a man who suffered a panic attack after being evacuated oxygen treatment.

There was mainly smoke damage to the flat, believed to be owned by a man in his late 40s.
