ADVOCATES of a friendlier, safer and cheaper way of living are spreading their message at a talk this week.
Cohousing, based on a Danish movement from the late 1960s which has now taken off in America, is where groups of 20 to 40 households share more of their lives together for friendship, help with childcare, security and mutual support.
There are 10 projects around the country run on cohousing principles, including in Wiltshire and East Sussex, but none yet in Berkshire.
But the county now has its own association hoping to set up a project here.
Spokesman Barney Milner said: “Cohousing neighbourhoods are a means of compensating for the alienating effects of modern life where neighbours don’t recognise each other and where day-to-day collaboration is minimal. Cohousing offers great benefits for children with secure play-space and shared activities. Parents can support each other with childcare, older people can find companionship and mutual support and for all residents there is much greater potential for social activities, and even business ventures.”
Cohousing developments have central pedestrian areas and greens, with cars kept to the edges of the development, with site management by the neighbours.
The talk, with a contribution from architect Anne Thorne is at RISC at 35-39 London Street tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm. Anyone can attend.
