ONE of the town’s most prominent Lib Dems has won election to help run a left-leaning faction linked to the national party.
Cllr Gareth Epps, who overtook Labour to finish second in Reading East at the last General Election, has been elected to the governing council of the Social Liberal Forum.
Some members of the group have voiced their worries or anger over the Government’s plans, especially on cuts, but Cllr Epps said: “Along with many others, I supported the formation of the Coalition Government and its agreement, and I still do.
“It is going to be important that in tackling the deficit, the measures taken are progressive. Historically it is the young, the poor and vulnerable who have suffered in times of austerity. While the emergency Budget contained positive measures to increase Capital Gains Tax and give money back to those on the lowest incomes, it’s vital that the strongest possible voice articulates options to Government that come from the proud Liberal tradition of Beveridge, Keynes and Lloyd George.”
