FIREFIGHTERS had to break into a basement flat to prevent a fire from starting.

The occupant of the flat in George Street, Caversham, was not present at the time, but had left a saucepan on the hob.

One crew from Dee Road station attended at 2pm today (Saturday) and were there for about 25 minutes while they forced their way into the flat, took the saucepan off the hob and ventilated the flat.

They left a note for the flat's occupant who had not returned.

Watch manager Luke Coleman said: "We would like to remind people to be mindful of what they have left on the hob. It could have been a lot worse."
