THOUSANDS of homes were left in the dark by power cuts in Lower Earley last night.

Just before 9pm, power to 3,000 homes was lost in what is believed to be a fault with an underground cable.

Duncan MacDonald of Southern Electric said: “At 8.55pm there was an interruption to the supply which affected 3,000, but within two minutes we got 2,000 customers back on by using a different part of the network, so we got two thirds back on within minutes. We got 800 back on within the hour so there were a few hundred people off until just after midnight.

“Investigations are on-going but we believe it may have been caused by a fault in the underground network.”
