A SEMI-ROTTEN tree crashed down in a busy road just inches from a passing car.

The large tree was uprooted from a front garden in high winds and came down in Elm Road, between its junctions with Shinfield Road and Elm Lane, at 12.45pm this afternoon.

Eyewitness Linden Morgan told the Chronicle that it the tree had already been cleared off the road by 1.50pm.

He said: "It only just missed a car although fortunately no-one was hurt.

"It would look like there's some rot in the stump, though the tree itself was alive and green. The stump separated from the roots and came out of the ground in the gale."
