Loose boat stopped by firefighters
AN UNMANNED boat free from its moorings had to be caught by the fire brigade.
Firefighters were called out at 3am to secure the pleasure boat, which was being swept along the River Kennet through Reading.
Watch manager Gareth Evans, of Dee Road fire station, said: "It came loose from its moorings and floated off down the river. It was heading towards where the Kennet comes into the Thames. It could have caused a nasty accident.
"There was nobody on it. It was a case of just stopping it from doing any damage to anything on its way."
The boat was in the river near to Queens Road in the town centre when the fire brigade managed to get it towards the bank and secure it, which took around 20 minutes. They informed the relevant river authorities to try to trace its owner.
Many boats travelled to Reading for the 21st annual Water Fest event today (Saturday), with stalls, boat competitions, dancing and other entertainment.
