A TRAINEE bus driver is taking his test today (Thursday) just two weeks after his first day at work.
The Chronicle has been following Paul Nunn on his training at the Reading Buses Academy and he has progressed rapidly, thanks to his career driving lorries and as a qualified driving instructor himself.
After passing every test so far with flying colours and getting his Certificate of Professional Competence last week, he is almost ready to get out on the roads.
He said: "I consider myself to be a good driver, without blowing my own trumpet - but it's more intense than I expected. There's a lot more to it, but it's not something that frightens me.
"It's the best possible driving job, but it's also the one that carries the most responsibility. I'll be carrying up to 100 people, adults, kids, elderly people, the disabled; it's hardly like a van full of parcels that can be replaced.
"I got straight on the bus on Day One, since I already have experience of driving big vehicles, and it's been great. A few things to iron out, of course, but I've been proud of myself and have been fine doing the emergency stops and reversing into a bay and so on."
He praised his fellow bus drivers and said that of his 11 jobs, many of them in the driving industry, Reading Buses' staff and management were the most professional and friendly.
If he passes today's driving test, he will start driving the midi-buses on the roads, buddied up with a veteran driver.
Academy team leader Mick Hughes said: "Paul has fitted in really well at Reading Transport. He has just the sort of attitude we look for in a driver. Paul has passed all four of his Theory and CPC tests so far, with the final test, the driving test, to come on Thursday. Four down, one to go!"
- UPDATE, Thursday 5pm:
Paul passed his test "with flying colours", according to Mr Hughes.
