A CANOEIST who fell from his boat and became trapped in the Thames had to be rescued by the fire service.

The 25-year-old was paddling with two friends near Thames Valley Park when he got into difficulties at about 8pm last night.

After struggling in the river, he managed to make it to an island in the middle of the river but his canoe floated off downstream. His two friends got to the riverbank and called the emergency services.

Wokingham Road station watch manager Phil Holdford said: "He was really, really cold and was taken away to hospital by ambulance."

Crews from Caversham Road and Whitley Wood stations helped in the rescue.
