FIREFIGHTERS are tackling cancer instead of fires this weekend, hoping to clean up at a charity car wash.

The Wokingham Road firestation crew is cleaning cars from 10am-4pm on Saturday to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity and Leukaemia Care.

Vicki Adams, who lives nearby, asked the firefighters if they would help her raise funds for Leukaemia Care because her friend's son is being treated for the disease.

She is running the London Marathon for the charity and said: "When a friend's child is diagnosed with leukaemia it really brings home the effect this can have. My friend's son was only four and about to start at Aldryngton Primary in Earley and join my son, Stephen. I would like to thank the fire and rescue service for their support, their response has been tremendous."

Firefighter and car wash organiser Ross Burton said: "We are really pleased to help Vicki raise money for such a brilliant charity which really makes a difference to people when they need it most. The Fire Fighters Charity also does a great job in helping fire and rescue service staff cope with the aftermath of injury or illness."
