Tory Cllr Tim Harris

LONELY and vulnerable people should know there is an activity they can get along to every day where they can find a smile and some company.

Reading Borough Council will try to set up a scheme for isolated people, alongside its existing Luncheon Club and 50 Plus+ schemes, after councillors unanimously backed a motion by Cllr Tim Harris.

He said: "This will significantly benefit many people across Reading. Isolation is not pleasant for anyone so imagine being vulnerable and lonely. Single vulnerable people should be able to get out of their homes every day."

Businesses such as supermarkets would be keen to get involved, he said, and although he knew it would be impossible to cater for everyone, a simple weekly or monthly timetable could encourage people to come along.

Other councillors backed the plan, saying it was a good idea as long as it could be done within existing budgets and would operate all over the borough, not just in particular areas.

Council officers will now draw up a plan for the Cabinet to decide on in June.
