PARTNERS at Waitrose and John Lewis in Reading began the day with the news that this year's bonus is to be 15% of their annual salary, equal to almost eight weeks pay.

Bosses at all John Lewis and Waitrose branches announced bonus figure this morning (Thursday) to partners of the co-operative. Last year's figure was 13%.

The company employs around 900 people at the John Lewis, Reading store in Broad Street and a further 750 in total at Waitrose in Oxford Road, Caversham, Twyford and Woodley.

Gordon Stenton, managing director of John Lewis, Reading described to partners how 2009 had been a year of two halves for the Broad Street shop.

He said: "After a challenging start to the year the store performed well in the second half with a sales increase of 1.8 % against the same period last year.

"This was particularly helped by a strong Christmas period when sales in the five weeks leading to the January 2, increased by 6.6%, despite the worst snow in 30 years, as customers were inspired by our strong Christmas and Clearance assortment."
