LIB Dem Parliamentary hopeful Gareth Epps has signed up to a pubgoer's manifesto and pledged to back beer drinkers.

The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) is asking general election candidates to commit to support well-run community pubs, rebalance alcohol taxation against supermarkets, reform the beer tie and show that well-run pubs can work against binge drinking and alcohol abuse.

Mike Benner, Camra's chief executive said: "We are delighted that Gareth Epps has promised to work to promote the interests of beer drinkers and pub goers. Well-run pubs make a huge contribution to community life, each of which injects £80,000 into their local economy every year."

Reading East candidate Cllr Epps added: "I am proud to be speaking up for community pubs, local brewers and consumers. Beer is part of Reading's heritage, and it is great to once again see local small brewers thriving in and around our town.

"There is a need to have a debate about the real effects of alcohol in our society."

- THERE is still time to take part in Camra's Ale Trail. Punters collect a leaflet from one of the 28 pubs taking part before visiting each one to sample their tipples, collecting a sticker and sending completed forms back to CAMRA with prizes on offer.
