VIRTUALLY every school in Reading contains potentially harmful asbestos.
Councillors heard on Tuesday night that only the newly-built or rebuilt John Madejski Academy, The Avenue School and George Palmer primary school were asbestos-free.
Tory Cllr Emma Warman had asked for a list of all schools containing asbestos and how the council was dealing with it, and education leader Cllr Jon Hartley said: "All the older schools contain some older buildings, so there's your list."
But he said that in many cases it is more dangerous to tear out asbestos-containing materials than just leave them be but that where there was any health risk, licensed contractors were called in to deal with it.
