GSCE league tables released today show Reading's John Madejski Academy (JMA) still struggling to hit Government targets.
Schools where 30% of pupils fail to get five A*-C grades, including English and Maths, face the threat of closure within a year if they do not improve, and the JMA in Hartland Road is at 18% for 2009's GCSEs. This is down from 23% the year before, but up from 7% in 2007. All other schools Reading borough were above the 30% target.
Lib Dem group leader and education spokeswoman Cllr Kirsten Bayes said: "Many pupils and staff have worked hard to achieve good results. However, looking at the comprehensive schools and academies in the borough, only 40% of students got five good GCSEs including English and Maths. At schools in the south of Reading this dropped to 30%. The Labour-run Council should be aiming to do much, much better than this and yet these figures show that progress has not only stalled - in south Reading it is going backwards."
