BRITISH Junior Chambers is to hold its national awards in Reading this weekend in a bid to boost its profile in the area.

BJC wants to breathe new life into its Reading chamber and believes holding the weekend-long conference and awards in town will help give it a shot in the arm.

The organisation is for young professionals in their 20s or 30s to help them develop, network and compete in business.

This weekend's activities begin with its national speaking competition tomorrow (Friday, Dec 4). On Saturday the main event is a session by Charles Duff of Coffey International called The Art of Engagement. There are further speakers including a national debating competition followed by Christmas dinner.

The weekend concludes with training events on the Sunday.

BJC spokeswoman Sarah-Jane Mills said the group offers an excellent source of personal development for entrepreneurs and professionals

She said: "In the current environment, talent is more important than ever. If people have been threatened with redundancy or if they have concerns it's a great way to gain more skills that are useful.

"For employers it's a great way to nurture talent."
