HOUSES were blasted over the weekend by shooters using weapons "more powerful than airguns".

Ronald Benn, 80, of Brading Way, Purley, was in his bungalow at 6.20pm on Saturday when he heard "an almighty crash" and found his double-glazed front door had been completely shattered by the shot and the glass panel had a small bullet hole in it.

He said: "I completely froze, it really shook me up. I lost my wife, Patricia, five weeks ago, you can't imagine the stress I was already under. It makes me feel so unsafe.

"It couldn't have been just an airgun or pellet gun because of the power of the impact, and the two police officers who came round said it must have been quite a powerful weapon. It's lawless Britain."

He thinks it will cost around £700 to replace his front door.

Another family, in nearby Mapledurham Drive, are expecting a £5,000 bill to replace their large double-glazed window which was badly damaged by another volley.

The owner of the house, who asked not to be named, said: "To do that to extra-thick glass it must have been a powerful weapon of some sort.

"Whatever it was must have been dangerous, it would kill you if it was fired at you."

He said he had heard that six houses were targeted in Purley on Saturday night, including another in nearby Waterside Drive.

Police spokeswoman Andrea Bennett confirmed that officers are investigating the three confirmed incidents and appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to call 08458 505 505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
