Carlos Baquero, of The Causeway, Caversham, was found guilty of unlawful wounding after he struck the 23-year-old as she tried to intervene in an argument with another man in the Purple Turtle.

The 29-year-old was sentenced at Reading Crown Court last Wednesday after a three day trial ending the previous day.

He also admitted to one count of racially aggravated harassment after shouting racist slurs at the arresting officer in the early hours of December 22, 2013.

The court heard how Baquero hit the woman on the back to the head with a glass causing severe lacerations.

The 23-year-old was trying to intervene in an argument Baquero was having with another man in the Gun Street bar.

He was sentenced to two months for the racist comments to the police officer, running concurrently.

Designated Investigator Dominque Lockwood, said: “This was an unprovoked, violent attack on an innocent victim and Baquero’s actions were described by the judge as 'nasty’ and 'cowardly’. Such conduct is unnecessary and will not be tolerated.”
