The borough council's Labour majority of 31 out of 46 councillors remains unchanged as the 15 newly elected and re-elected members held each of their respective wards for their party.

Three new Conservative councillors will join the council in place of their colleagues as Claire McDonald (Caversham), Tom Steele (Kentwood) and Clare Grashoff (Peppard) retain their parties positions.

Leader of the council Cllr Jo Lovelock said: "In terms of the local election, particularly given what has happened nationally, I'm really pleased with the results and to have retained all the councillor seats in Reading."

Conservative councillor for Kentwood ward Tom Steele said: "I'm a little surprised at the results but will be looking forward to going to bed after being here since 5am yesterday. But the journey has been well with it.

"I've been a councillor before for this wardroom 2007 to 2011 but had to step down as I needed a hip replacement but needless to say I'm glad to be back."

The Greens also held their seat in Park ward as Josh Williams kept the party's number of councillors at three.

Cllr Williams said: "I'm thrilled to gave got such a fantastic result. I'll probably be celebrating by going to bed though to be honest.

"One thing I really want to focus on is recycling around Reading as I genuinely believe people just aren't doing it right."
