I HAVE to reply to the two letters about the cinema with booze in Reading. I am sorry for Chris Smith (Chronicle, September 30) to say that my letter the previous week should not have been the star letter. But that has nothing to do with him, or me, because the star letter was decided by the editor of this newspaper.

I still think booze in cinemas is a very bad idea. I have asked many people about this matter and they all agreed. For the record, Reading once had nine cinemas and only the Granby had a bar, and only in the lounge. The cinemas that did not have bars were the Rex, Regal, Savoy, Central, Gaumont Pavilion and Odeon, and also the Glendale, and they are closed. Not the time warp, it was television. When the Granby was selling No booze at cinema

When the Granby was selling booze in the 1960s they never had binge yobs. Look around the town and you can see people walking around with cans of beer. Sometimes I think they clean their teeth with it. So I say to Ray Povey (Chronicle, September 30) there is no fuss, just common sense. Two cans of beer to yobs is like a smoking gun.
