BROKEN glass and human faeces has left workers frustrated after travellers arrived on private land on Sunday.

People say the site at Napier Court was overtaken by a 'large camp' of caravans despite the security measures on the estate.

Complaints about children jumping on cars and litter have been reported to Reading Borough Council.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "Travellers have set up a large camp in a private commercial estate Napier Court.

"This is a fully operational site with multiple business working on site daily. The atmosphere is very tense.

"They have forced the private car park barrier open and have been onsite since Sunday.

"There is now 24-hour security for all buildings as cars and property has already been damaged by the travellers.

Reading Chronicle:

"As far as we are aware, they have received a notice to leave, but they will probably still be here tomorrow.

"There is broken glass on the floor, they have been jumping on cars and even left s**t over the floor."

It is believed that the illegal encampment is the first to hit this particular estate in recent months, although there have been other offences across the town.

Alok Sharma, MP for Reading West, recently welcomed the launch of a new consultation to crack down on travellers, after the council spent more than £95,000 clearing up 87 encampments last year.

The consultation, which will run until June 15, will seek views from local authorities, police, residents and the travelling community.

Last year, Reading Borough Council launched a consultation on transforming a disused patch of land into a dedicated traveller site near Richfield Avenue.

The concerned resident added: "This is the first time I have seen something like this in this area in the last two and a half years.

"There is security during the day and overnight, but that does not seem to be working. They have now moved to the Tesco car park at the end of the road."
