Reading East's MP has called for public sector workers to receive a pay rise.

Matt Rodda attended the Labour Party conference in Brighton over the weekend, and took the time to comment on the government's 1% cap on public sector wages.

This weekend's conference was Mr Rodda's first as an MP, following his victory over Conservative candidate Rob Wilson in June's election.

Mr Rodda said: “We need to do more to support our public sector workers – and this is why I have signed Unison's 'Pay Up Now' pledge at the Labour Conference.

"Public sector pay has been cut in real terms because it has not kept up with inflation, with some workers experiencing a 15% cut since 2010.

"This is not acceptable, and I look forward to working more closely with Unison members in Reading to help challenge the cap on public sector workers pay in my constituency."

Statistics show that between 2010 and 2016, public sector pay rose by just 4.4%, despite the cost of living rising by 22%.

Mr Rodda visited the Unison stand at the Labour conference, one of the largest trade unions in the UK, representing over 1.3 million members across the country.
