THE hunt for a group of football fans who reportedly set off a smoke bomb on a train just a day after a horrific tube-terror attack is set to continue, transport police have revealed.

British Transport Police (BTP) wants to track down the thugs responsible after the incident was captured on video and spread across social media.

Reading FC blasted the “dangerous and extremely irresponsible” behaviour and said the club is working with relevant authorities to track down who was responsible.

The video shows a packed train carriage with blue smoke billowing in the background. It is not yet clear who is responsible but BTP has launched an investigation.

A spokesman said: "We are aware of the reports of the incident and are making enquiries. No arrest have been made yet and we have no further details at the moment.

"If anyone has any information and has not yet spoken to police, we would ask them to call 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016."

People can be heard chanting popular Reading FC chants in the video.

It was understood the incident happened shortly before Royals' away clash against Brentford FC.

A spokesman for Reading FC added: “Reading Football Club wholeheartedly condemns the dangerous and extremely irresponsible behaviour seemingly displayed by an individual or individuals whilst travelling on a train to watch us play Brentford yesterday afternoon.

"Behaviour of this nature is entirely unacceptable. As a club we actively assisted the relevant local authorities with an investigation into the incident yesterday and we openly appeal to our fans to report any information which may assist in the identification of those responsible to the British Transport Police.

"We also acknowledge that the vast majority of the 1,650 away fans behaved impeccably in backing the team from the first whistle to the last at Griffin Park and should be commended for their superb support yesterday."

It came less than 48 hours after a bucket bomb exploded on a London Underground train and left more than 20 people injured.

The incident sparked a wave of furious comments as people slammed the culprits on Twitter.

One user said: "After yesterday's tube incident! This shows a great deal of maturity and responsibility. Embarassing!"

Another comment reads: "That is a ridiculously stupid thing to do."

British Transport Police also commented on the post and urged anyone with information to contact the force immediately.

  • There is no suggestion the people seen in the video are responsible for setting off the flare.
