ESTEEMED dignitaries joined in with the celebrations as the Ukranian community united for an important ceremony.

The Reading Ukranian Community Centre on Sidmouth Street reopened on Saturday after being closed for several months for restoration.

Mayor Rose Williams, Matt Rodda and Alok Sharma were joined by Natalia Galibarenko, the Ukranian ambassador, for the celebration.

Mick Pollek, who helped organise the event, said: "Ukrainians have been in Reading since the end of the Second World War.

"There was a Displaced Persons camp in Grazely, that processed the refugees, prior to allowing them to enter the wider population, although they had to report to the local police station for a defined period.

"Sadly most of those original Ukrainians have died, but we are maintaining the traditions and culture that was taught to us, passing it on to our children and grandchildren."
