A COMMUNITY centre which has been in disrepair for more than five years has received a facelift thanks to determined fundraisers.

The Rotary Club of Matins Reading presented a cheque worth £2,000 to allow volunteers to continue the repairs to Whitley Wood Community Centre on Copenhagen Close on Wednesday.

Several thousands of pounds have already been raised to give the centre new kitchens, toilets and a new garden for elderly visitors.

Reading Chronicle:

Steve Clifton, from the Rotary Club, said: "It has taken us a number of years to get this project off the ground, but we have been able to raise enough money to refurbish the centre.

"Many people of all ages use this facility and it is such a vital part of the community. A lot of people young and old are isolated and there is a real need for them to have access to somewhere like this.

"The whole community has really felt the absence of having a quality facility in the area that offers them basic conversations with like-minded people and recreational activities."
