A PRISONER who mowed down a policeman is set to be prosecuted for manslaughter following a review.

PC Gareth Browning was on duty in Whitley in November 2013 when he was hit by a stolen car he was attempting to stop on Lower Earley Way.

The 36-year-old tragically died in April this year after failing to recover from his injuries.

The stolen car was being driven by Luke Haywood, a prisoner who was on day release.

Haywood was jailed for nine years after he was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to resist arrest and aggravated vehicle taking and going equipped to burgle.

The attorney general has granted the authority to prosecute Haywood,32, formerly of Ian Mikardo Way, Reading, with one count of manslaughter.

Haywood was jailed for nine years following PC Browning's death

Haywood will appear before Reading Magistrates’ Court on a date which is yet to be determined.

His funeral was held at Saint Mary the Virgin Church in Chieveley in June.

After the funeral, assistant chief constable Nikki Ross said: "It is fitting that so many people joined Gareth's family to show their respects, offer their support and share their memories of Gareth.

"Gareth was a hugely respected colleague with ten years experience as a police officer.

"It is a stark reminder that Gareth's death demonstrates the sacrifices police officers make across the country every minute of every day of every year. Gareth was proud to serve and we are all proud of him."

PC Browning required constant care and died three years after the collision.

Haywood was released from Springhill Prison for day release on November 30 when his friend gave him a stolen car.

He fled down Lower Earley Way towards Shinfield Road hitting speeds of 50mph.
