A NEIGHBOUR has described the bomb-like bang of when a car slew off the road and smashed into the side walls of block of flats.

Residents at Burford Court were left shocked in the early hours of Sunday when a vehicle crashed into the surrounding railings and a parked car outside the homes.

The driver fled the scene leaving the car embedded in a pile of bricks and metalwork and police are appealing for information to help trace them down.

Dave Adams, who lives on the top floor of the building in Caroline Street, West Reading, said his wife was awake at the time watching TV and heard the moment the Volkswagen Scirocco slammed into the wall and railings.

He said: "I don't know if they were alright but their car smashed into the back wall of the house where we live and knocked down the railings.

"It has left a whole lot of a mess.

"My wife was sat up watching something on TV and she thought it was a rocket or a bomb or something but it was the crash."

Fragments of the blue Volkswagen Scirocco could be seen strewn across the scene along with one of the street signs which had been knocked clean off its posts and into the front gardens.

Mr Adams added: "It is just like in the war as if a bomb has gone off, there is debris everywhere."

A parked car owned by a fellow resident was also damaged in the smash and Mr Adams said police had left a note with the owner letting them know what to do next.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "We were called to a fail to stop in William Street after a collision which saw the vehicle land in a wall and a parked car at Burford Court.

"The driver decamped leaving a blue VW Scirocco.

"It had no current owner details so we could not trace the driver.

"We are now investigating and the person who owned the vehicle that was hit has been contacted."

The driver was described only as white and it is not known whether they were male or female.

Anyone who saw anything around the Caroline Street area at that time is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.
