THE shutters have been closed on a convenience store that is weeks away from having its alcohol licence brought up for review.

Bailiffs acting on behalf of the Baker Street shop's landlord visited the property and served the business owners with a possession notice.

The order which has been posted on the front wall of the Nisa Superstore is dated from September 1 and said the action was carried out by private contractors Direct Collection Bailiffs Limited.

Last month Reading Borough Council announced that it would be calling the shop's alcohol licence for review in front of one of its committees.

The action came following an appeal from Thames Valley Police to look into a number of licensing infractions including employing illegal immigrants, selling to known street drinkers who were already drunk and stocking super-strength lager below the minimum legal prices.

A spokesman for Reading Borough Council said the licensing review is still planned to go ahead.

He said: "A meeting of Reading Borough Council’s licensing committee will be held on September 25 to hear a review of the licence of the Nisa Superstore in Baker Street.

"The grounds for the review, which was applied for by Thames Valley Police, are in respect of alleged breaches of licensing and immigration laws and of the Theft Act.

"We are aware the store is currently closed but this is not due to any direct action taken by the council."
