Tesco's customers in Reading have donated almost 7,000 meals for food banks over just three days.

In the sixth Neighbourhood Food Collection initiative run by Reading Tesco shoppers donated 6,810 meals in total throughout the town's 11 stores.

Customers donated non-perishable foods such as tinned fruit, long-life milk and cereals, before volunteers collected the donations.

Tony Capnos, store manager at Reading West Tesco Extra, said: "The response we had from the food bank collection in Reading West Extra, from the community and colleagues has been truly amazing. This makes a real difference for people who really need it.”

The food will be redistributed to people in need via charity partners Fareshare and The Trussell Trust, with Tesco adding an extra 30% to all customer donations.

Julie Rampton, Community Champion at the store, said: “I have been in a position where I have needed the help of the food bank in Reading. Thankfully with their support, I've been able to turn my life around and am now in a position to help others in the same position. It's an honour to work for a great company like Tesco that helps the community.”
