A MAN has died after being hit by a train close to Aldermaston leading to delays between Reading and Newbury.

British Transport Police were called to the scene shortly after 6am this morning and lines were closed for a few hours while emergency services worked.

The route has since reopened but delays are expected until around 10.30am today.

It is not yet known who the man was and officers are working to establish his identity and inform their next of kin.

A BTP spokesman said: "We were called to the line near Aldermaston station in Berkshire at 6.10am on Wednesday, 27 April to reports of a person hit by a train.

"Officers from BTP and Thames Valley Police attended the incident with medics from South Central Ambulance Service and a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We will now work to identify the person and inform their family, and a file will be compiled for the coroner.

"The incident is being treated as non-suspicious."

A statement on the Great Western Rail website said: "Following a person being hit by a train earlier between Westbury and Reading all lines have now reopened.

"Train services running to and from these stations may be delayed by up to 30 mins or revised. Disruption is expected until 10:30 27/04.

"The limited road transport currently introduced between Reading and Newbury in both directions will remain in place to support the train service."
