A Post mistress said he could have been killed after a car ploughed into a wall just metres away from where she was sleeping.

Sue Chana was awoken by a loud bang when a blue hatchback left the road and embedded itself into a village post office and store on Tuesday night.

The Post Office kiosk at the store in Woodcote, South Oxfordshire, was closed the next day and the crumpled car left propping the building up due to fears that the building would collapse.

Two young men who were in the blue Volkswagen Polo were uninjured but Mrs Chana, owner of the shop, feared she was under attack when she first heard the collision.

The 65-year-old said: "I heard this big crash and did not know what it was.

"When I looked through the window I could see two guys outside and one of them was on the phone.

"I was really scared and I thought we might have been ram raided."

Fire crews and police rushed to the scene and evacuated the building while investigators assessed the extent of the damage.

Staff were able to reopen the main store the following morning but the Post Office kiosk - which sits directly behind where the car crashed through - has been declared off limits.

Internal walls and ceiling panels had been skewed out of place and Mrs Chana fears that side of the shop will collapse once the vehicle is removed.

The store owner - who has run the village shop without incident since 1987 - said they had been in touch with their insurers but were unsure what the cost of the damage would run up to.

Confused customers trickled into the shop throughout Wednesday morning with many turning to leave once they had seen the postal kiosk was closed.

Mrs Chana said: "We are going to lose business. If people cannot use the Post Office then people will not come here.

"It's an inconvenience to local people as well because there are no other Post Offices near here.

"The damage is just horrendous. It could have killed someone, people are always walking down there.

"They could have killed me."

Thames Valley Police confirmed they were called to a collision in Whitehouse Road at 8.22pm on Tuesday night.

A spokesman for the force said: "Two men were in the vehicle but neither were injured and nobody else was reported injured from the building.

"Nobody has been arrested and at this stage there is nothing to suggest this was anything other than an accident."
