A FATHER is being held in police custody over the alleged murder of his son, the Chronicle can exclusively reveal.

The 34-year-old man died yesterday after sustaining serious injuries in a brawl in Reading. He was named locally as Daniel Holt.

An ambulance crew rushed to a home Bramshaw Road at 1.20am following reports of an altercation.

When they arrived, it immediately became clear Mr Holt had suffered serious injuries in an assault and paramedics called police for help.

Medics took tragic Mr Holt to hospital where doctors battled to save his life but he sadly died yesterday afternoon.

Thames Valley Police officers immediately arrested a 57-year-old on suspicion of grievous bodily harm but he was later re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

It has since emerged this morning that the arrested man is the victim's father.

Detective Inspector Stuart Blaik, of the Thames Valley Police Major Crime Unit, said: “I understand that an incident such as this will cause concern to the local community, however we are carrying out a full and thorough investigation.

"We have made an arrest in connection with this incident.

"I would also ask that anyone who has any information relating to this incident, or who has any details which they think could help our investigation to please call police.

"The victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers."

Neighbours described seeing a police car at the scene this morning, then seeing forensic officers appearing at the scene this afternoon. 

Officers remain at the address and will remain in the area as the investigation continues. They made door-to-door inquiries quizzing neighbours to ask if they had seen anything.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "Officers were called at about 1.20am on Wednesday by the ambulance service to an address in Bramshaw Road following reports that a 34-year-old man had been assaulted.

"He was taken to hospital for treatment but sadly died this afternoon.

"A 57-year-old man from Tilehurst was arrested earlier today on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the incident and has since been re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

"He currently remains in police custody."
