A SPATE of expensive drain cover and ironworks thefts has resulted in a council appeal for vigilance.

It is thought 15 road gulley gratings have been stolen from the Tilehurst and Southcote areas in the last week at a cost of £4,500.

Reading Borough Council chiefs believe they are being taken to sell as scrap metal, with highways officers working hard to replace the drain covers.

Councillor Tony Page, lead member for strategic environment, planning and transport, said: “As well as being expensive to replace these covers quickly, these thefts also present a real danger to road users.

“I would urge people to keep their eyes peeled and to call the police if they see anyone attempting to take a cover or acting suspiciously.”

A spokesman for the council confirmed each of the gulley gratings costs roughly £300 to replace.

The thefts have been reported to the police who have asked patrolling officers to be vigilant.

Thames Valley Police would like to hear from anyone who witnesses a cover being taken and anyone who spots a missing cover should call the council on 01189 373787.
