MORE than 60 children were presented with awards for excelling in sport, dance and other activities. Social workers were allowed to nominate cared for children they worked with to receive awards and certificates.

Colin the Magician was on hand to entertain the crowd of youngsters who received their wards from deputy major Rose Williams in the morning.

Dancer Leon Lenga-Kroma received an award for his success in several competitions before the 16-year-old took to the stage to entertain the crowds.

Meanwhile older children were given their awards by Tony Jones, lead councillor for education. “It was wonderful to hear about the fantastic achievements of so many young people at our Looked After Children celebration,” he said.

“These children have managed to achieve so much, often in difficult circumstances, and it is a credit to them, to our social care workers and our foster carers that they are developing so well.

“It was a joy to hear so many heart-warming stories and I would like to congratulate everybody involved in the day.

“The path into adult life can be a challenging one for all young people but it can be even more so for those who have been in care.”

The presentation at The Avenue School in Tilehurst, on Tuesday, October 25, coincided with National Care Leavers Week.
